Headline: International Criminal Court to Investigate Two New Crime Cases in Darfur

  • Luis Moreno Ocampo told member countries he would investigate two new Darfur crime cases in 2008
  • The focus of these new investigations would be those who attacked refugees and peacekeepers, he said
  • Ocampo also mentioned that he issued two arrest warrants earlier this year against Ahmed Harun and Ali Kushaib for the crimes they committed in Darfur

Headline: Sudan Neighbors Meet in Sharm Al Sheikh

  • Sudan, its four neighbors – Chad, Egypt, Eritrea, and Libya – and international envoys – Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim – met in Egyptian resort Charm Al Sheikh
  • Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Al Ghaid said the meeting would discuss coordinating efforts to convince all rebel groups to attend next round of peace talks in Libya
  • As for tense relations between North and South Sudan, he was optimistic that the situation would improve given the two sides’ desire to resolve their differences

Headline: UN Halts Operation to Return Sudanese Refugees

  • UN agency reported that it was forced to halt an operation to return Sudanese refugees from Kenya to South Sudan because of tribal fighting that claimed 34 lives
  • The agency indicated that the situation was still tense preventing it from assisting in the return of most of Kakuma refugee camp resident in northeastern Kenya
  • The agency was able to return over 70,000 refugees since 2005

Headline: Rice to Meet with Ruling Partners in Addis Ababa

  • Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir and his First Vice President Silva Kiir took control of controversial issue of sovereignty over oil-rich Abiye region.  The decision is another sign of improving relations between the two sides
  • US official in Sudan Alberto Fernandez said Condoleeza Rice will meet with the Sudanese leadership in Addis Ababa to urge the ruling partners to set their differences aside and work on implementing the 2005 peace agreement
