  • Khartoum indicated it fully supported UN Security Council resolution 1769 concerning deployment of AU – UN hybrid force in Darfur
  • Sudanese foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to work with international community to implement the resolution and rejected all kinds of pressure and threats
  • It added Sudan would not accept European forces , explaining that any country has the right to refuse peacekeepers it does not want
  • The ministry stated that the main obstacle to hybrid force deployment was lack of funds and helicopters

Headline: Eliasson in Darfur to Restart Peace Negotiations

  • UN Envoy Jan Eliasson visited some tribes in Darfur in an effort to convince rebel groups to join peace talks
  • He told some Fur tribes that he wanted the peace negotiations to start at the same time as hybrid force deployment
  • Meanwhile, Abdul Wahid Nour reiterated his opposition to any peace talks before the deployment of the hybrid force
  • As for the tribal leaders, they presented Eliasson with  a list of demands that included: speedy deployment of international troops, disarm militias groups, return lands occupied by Arab tribes to their lawful owners, and compensate victim’s families and those who lost property

Headline: Sarkozy Says French Troops Provide Indirect Assistance to Chad

  • French President Sarkozy told journalists in Lisbon that French troops currently deployed in eastern Chad provide indirect assistance to Chad
  • He added that if French troops were not welcome, they would leave immediately, but no such sentiment was expressed officially
  • It is worth noting that Chadian rebels demanded the departure of these troops and accused them of supporting the regime of Idriss Deby
