Headline: US Congress to Pressure Sudan to End Darfur Crisis

  • US Senate approved a bill that allows federal, state, and local authorities to divest from Sudan in order to put more pressure on Khartoum government to end Darfur crisis
  • The bill, which was adopted despite the Administration’s opposition, was sponsored by Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd and aims to increase pressure on the Sudanese government to end the crisis in Darfur
  • Meanwhile Sudanese Umma party charged that because of lack funding and sophisticated equipment, and delaying tactics by the Sudanese government, Darfur refugees continue to suffer

  • United Nations issued an urgent call for $2.29 billion to fund its humanitarian operations in Sudan in 2008
  • Sudan is the United Nations’ biggest humanitarian engagement.  It has 959 ongoing projects throughout Sudan, including in Darfur
