Headline: African Union Supports Sudan’s Territorial Integration

  • After meeting with Sudanese president, African Union leader Alpha Omar Conary called on all parties to support Darfur peace process and reiterated the Union’s endorsement of Sudan’s territorial integrity
  • Conary also maintained peace in Sudan to be an internal issue and added Darfur crisis could only resolved through political negotiations
  • Meanwhile, according to Darfur hybrid force leader Martin Luther 18 units to join the hybrid force, mostly from AU with 2 units from Nepal and Thailand

Headline: Sudan to Link Currency to the Euro Instead of the Dollar

  • Sudan’s Central Bank announced it will link its currency to the euro instead of the dollar starting January 1, 2008.
  • Experts said the move was dictated by the dollar’s sharp decline and expected some confusion at the start of the shift but were confident the situation would quiet down in few days

Headline: France to Put Pressure on Rebel Leader Abdul Wahid Nour

  • After meeting with Sudanese president, AU leader Alpha Omar Conary called on all parties to support Darfur peace process and reiterated the Union’s endorsement of Sudan’s territorial integrity
  • For the success of Darfur hybrid force, Conary urged participating countries to provide advanced equipment and government in Sudan to provide logistical assistance
  • Meanwhile, authorities in France extended rebel leader Abdul Wahid Nour’s visa an additional three months on condition he embrace the peace process

Headline: Funding and Darfur Rebels’ Peace Participation Necessary to Hybrid Force’s Success

  • Despite failure on some issues, UN and AU decided to transfer peacekeeping mission in Darfur to hybrid force.  According to experts, this change was due to UN’s approval of the force’s funding
  • AU leader Alpha Omar Conary warned that international community would not tolerate any attacks on the hybrid force, while government in Sudan vowed to cooperate with international community in rebuilding the region
  • Meanwhile, Sudanese experts insisted that full cooperation by Sudanese government and Darfur rebels to be necessary to the hybrid force’s success
