Headline: Diplomatic Actions in Khartoum and International Conference in Libya to Resolve Darfur Crisis

Khartoum has seen increased diplomatic activities to resolve the Darfur crisis throughout the week:

  • Rudolph Adada, joint United Nations and African Union envoy to Darfur arrived on Thursday to meet with Sudanese officials and investigate the situation and conditions in Darfur
  • Jan Eliasson arrived in Sudan earlier this week and is now in Junaina, the capital of West Darfur State, to meet with local officials
  • Salim Ahmed Salim, African Union envoy, to arrive on Saturday

Meanwhile, United Nations spokesperson in Khartoum indicated that Libya will host an international conference on Darfur on July 15 and 16 to evaluate the peace process progress and review proposals on how to launch peace talks. Libya, Sudan, Chad, Eritrea, Egypt, Canada, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States, Holland, Norway, Arab League, and European Union will attend the conference. At the same time, Chinese envoy to Africa, Liu Guilin said China will ensure weapons it sells to Sudan do not end up in Darfur. Humanitarian groups doubt such a ban can be independently verified.

Headline: European Parliament: Darfur Hybrid Force Is not the “Miracle Solution”

By: Ismail Adam

United Nations envoy, Jan Eliasson, arrived in Khartoum to push along political efforts to resolve the conflict while UN reports indicated renewed fighting between government forces and rebel group fighters. Radhia Ashuri, UN spokesperson in Khartoum said:

  • Fighting started on June 26 in North Darfur State in areas south Tawila
  • The fighting severely impacted humanitarian aid work
  • Attacks against convoys, vehicles, and humanitarian aid workers still persist

Meanwhile, European Parliament members expressed skepticism that deployment of hybrid force in Darfur would be the “magic solution” to the crisis:

  • Members want to know how the troops will be used and how the $2 billion will be spent

These concerns are raised days before the United Nations Security Council is to discuss funding the Darfur hybrid force.
