Headline: Report by International Crisis Group Condemns Everyone Involved in Darfur Crisis

  • A report by International Crisis Group indicated that Darfur situation worsened in 2007 and urged UN and AU to change their peace strategy in West Sudan
  • The group stated that violence increased while humanitarian activities retreated, and international peacekeeping mission became unrealistic as reaching a political solution has become hard to reach
  • The report also stated that peace talks in Libya failed because of influential rebel groups’ absence and boycott. And declared Abuja agreement between Khartoum government and Minnawi group a failure too
  • The group accused Al Bashir of carrying out destructive policies in Darfur and Minnawi group of conducting attacks on civilians, displaced people, humanitarian aid groups, and AU peacekeepers
  • The reports also urged inclusion of Arab tribes in any peace talks

Headline: Darfur Rebels’ Threats against Chinese Peacekeepers Inflame the Situation in the Region

  • Darfur region is set for increased tensions following Darfur rebel groups’ threats against Chinese peacekeepers
  • Justice and Equality Movement and Sudan Liberation Movement – Nour’s group expressed their opposition to Chinese peacekeepers deployment in Darfur because of China’s special ties to Khartoum government.  The rebels blamed China of supplying the weapons used in Darfur genocide
  • Representatives of Darfur displaced people also opposed Chinese peacekeepers because “China is the main partner in the government’s actions against Darfur civilians”
  • Sudanese government said Darfur police would do its best to protect international peacekeepers
  • Meanwhile, Sudanese experts expressed concern for the region’s stability.  Haidar Ibrahim, head of Sudan Studies Center, warned against turning Darfur into a new Iraq because of competing superpowers’ interests
  • Political analyst Mohamed Ali Saeed was concerned about JEM threat as it is has an impressive armed rebel wing and is well-equipped
  • International law expert Sheikeddine Shidu found actions by the government and Darfur rebel groups to be unacceptable

Headline: Khartoum Prepared to Confront any “Terror” Targeting Hybrid Force in Darfur

  • Sudanese government announced it prepared security measures to protect hybrid peacekeeping force against any terrorist actions
  • Meanwhile hundreds of Darfur displaced people demonstrated against Chinese peacekeepers deployment.  Darfur rebel groups, including unified Sudan Liberation Movement, Justice and Equality Movement, Sudan Liberation Movement – Nour’s group also declared their opposition to the Chinese peacekeepers
  • Al Qaida, too, called for armed opposition to international peacekeepers

Headline: Clashes between Army and Rebels in Eastern Chad

  • Fighting broke out between Chadian government troops and Union of Forces for Democracy and Development rebels
  • Rebel leader Mohamed Nouri stated that intense fighting was raging not too far from Abeche in eastern Chad
  • The Union was one of the four rebel groups that singed a peace agreement with N’Djamena in Libya on October 25, 2022
