  • UN Security Council members were disappointed after AU and UN envoys failed to advance peace negotiations in Darfur
  • Sudan’s representative at the Security Council indicated that members were considering a number of options, including relieving the two envoys and replacing them with one envoy or appointing a third person to assist them in their mission

Headline: Chad Welcomes Effort to Defuse Tensions with Sudan

  • Chadian official sources indicated that Ahmed Mohamed Bashir, Minister of the Interior, paid a secret visit to Sudan to calm tensions between the two countries
  • Chad also voiced support for efforts to mediate between the two countries on condition that Sudan respect and abide by signed agreements in Libya and Saudi Arabia
  • Libya and European Union sent officials to the region in an effort to diffuse tensions between the two neighbors

Headline: Efforts to Speed up Hybrid Force Deployment

  • Jean Marie Guehenno, Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, visited North Darfur and called for increased cooperation between Sudan and UN to speed up hybrid force deployment
  • Guehenno met with hybrid force and North Darfur officials and called on Sudan to provide needed assistance to ensure hybrid force’s success
  • Rudolph Adada called for full cooperation between the hybrid force and Sudan in order for the force to carry out its mission successfully

Headline: Lack of Security Threatens Humanitarian Aid Operations in Darfur

  • UN World Food Program warned that a surge of bandit attacks were threatening to stop food aid to more than 2 million people in Darfur
  • WFP representative in Sudan, Kenro Oshidari, indicated that transport companies were refusing to send in trucks because of increased attacks, which caused half of aid supplies to remain undelivered
  • Oshidari said that if the attacks continued, the program would be forced to curtail its delivery efforts by mid February
  • The program called on Sudanese government to provide protection to the trucks carrying aid shipment to Darfur
  • Since the beginning of the year, 23 trucks were stolen and 19 drivers were kidnapped according to the program
