Reuters: Peacekeepers slam Sudan for "excessive" Darfur raid. International peacekeepers criticized Sudan on Tuesday for using "excessive, disproportionate" force in a raid on a camp for displaced persons in Darfur that left more than 30 dead. The unusually harsh statement from the joint U.N./African Union UNAMID peacekeepers accused Khartoum of breaking a Darfur peace agreement by using guns against displaced people armed mostly with "sticks, knives, and spears".

Agence France-Presse: President Beshir on rare visit to south Sudan. President Omar al-Beshir made a rare visit to autonomous southern Sudan on Wednesday, signing a development contract half way through implementation of a landmark peace accord between north and south. The head of state, who faces a possible international arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide in Sudan's western region of Darfur, was greeted by a full guard of honour at Juba airport. Wearing a safari suit and accompanied by stringent security he then drove into town to sign a hydroelectric agreement, which officials in Khartoum said paved the way for three dams to be built in southern Sudan.

Associated Press: 2 hijackers of Darfur plane surrender in Libya. Two hijackers who commandeered a jetliner from Sudan's Darfur region and diverted it to a remote desert airstrip in southern Libya surrendered Wednesday after a 22-hour standoff, an airline official said.

Associated Press: Clooney, Pitt arrive in Venice for film festival. George Clooney hosted a charity event Tuesday night to raise money for victims in Darfur. The event was expected to raise $2 million, said Manuele Malenotti, the executive director of the Italian clothing company Belstaff, which sponsored the event.
