Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Reuters: Sudan accused of bombing Darfur rebels, villagers. Insurgent groups said Sudanese forces launched "very heavy" ground and air attacks on rebel positions and villages in North Darfur on Saturday, in the latest of a string of reported assaults. A spokesman for Sudan's Armed Forces told state media soldiers had deployed in the area to protect aid convoys from armed bandits but made no mention of any fighting, saying they had not met any resistance.

Reuters: Thousands flee heavy Darfur fighting - aid groups. Thousands of villagers have been forced to flee their homes after more than a week of heavy clashes between Sudanese forces and rebels in North Darfur, aid sources said on Monday. Entire villages have been abandoned after residents took shelter in surrounding mountains and open land, cut off from food aid and clinics, humanitarian officers said. The fighting has further undermined hopes for peace at a time the government is trying to challenge an attempt by the International Criminal Court's prosecutor to try President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes in the western region.

The Guardian: Britain blocks prosecution of Sudan's ruler. Britain is playing a key role in efforts to block the prosecution of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for the carnage in Darfur. Human rights activists yesterday accused the government of a 'shocking abdication' of its commitment to justice after it emerged that Britain is backing moves by Libya, the Arab League and several African countries to halt the indictment of Bashir by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

Reuters: Human rights situation grim in Sudan - UN report. Sudan's human rights situation is grim with killings of civilians by government and rebel forces and arbitrary arrests and torture for political reasons, a United Nations investigator said on Monday. Sima Samar, in a report for the U.N. Human Rights Council, said breaches of humanitarian law were being committed not only in the long-troubled Darfur region in the west but also in other parts of the country, including the south.
