Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

AFP: China urges Darfur factions to negotiate peace. China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Wednesday urged the warring parties in the war-torn Sudanese region of Darfur to negotiate a peace agreement. In a wide-ranging speech on Chinese foreign policy, Yang highlighted Darfur as one of four "hotspot issues", alongside tensions over North Korea, Iran's nuclear programme and the Middle East. "China supports parallel progress in both the political process of the Darfur issue and the deployment of the peacekeeping operation," Yang said at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations.

VOA: Conflicting Priorities Complicate US Policy Toward Sudan. U.S. policy in Sudan is conflicted between ending the humanitarian crisis in Darfur and rewarding Khartoum for quietly being a partner in the global battle against terrorism, says a senior analyst at a global intelligence company. The director of sub-Saharan Africa analysis at Stratfor, Mark Schroeder, says two policies in the Obama administration are at odds regarding U.S. policy towards Sudan.

VOA: South Sudan Warns of Unilateral Secession. A senior South Sudanese leader has threatened the region may unilaterally declare independence if key disagreements over a scheduled referendum are not resolved. The January 2011 vote gives South Sudan the option of choosing independence. The secretary-general of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, Pagan Amum, told VOA the South might simply secede if it is not satisfied with the North's handling of the independence referendum preparations.

AP: Israel struggles with African refugee dilemma. Five years after a mounted militia stormed his village, torching houses and killing his relatives, Ibrahim Saad el-Din, a refugee from Sudan's Darfur region, gazed at remnants of another slaughter: hundreds of shoes worn by Jews killed in Poland's Majdanek death camp during the Holocaust. Saad el-Din was among a dozen African refugees brought by an Israeli advocacy group to Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial last week, hoping to spur public sympathy for their plight by invoking the Jewish people's own history fleeing death and persecution.
