Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

February 4, 2023

Reuters: Peacekeepers plan no-fire zone in Darfur town. Peacekeepers said Wednesday they are hoping to set up a no-fire zone to protect 30,000 civilians caught in the middle of clashes between Sudan army troops and rebels in a Darfur town. The U.N. says at least 30 people have already been killed and thousands displaced in three weeks of fighting over the south Darfur settlement of Muhajiriya that has been condemned by senior U.N. and U.S. officials. Fighting has escalated in Darfur in the build-up to a decision by the International Criminal Court on whether to issue an arrest warrant against President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on charges of masterminding war crimes in the region.

New York Times: Sudan: U.S. Envoy to U.N. Speaks Out on Darfur. Susan E. Rice, the American ambassador to the United Nations, called on Sudan to protect civilians in Muhajiriya, in Darfur, where fighting has erupted. While the rebel attack that provoked the clashes was "of grave concern," she said that "the onus is on the government to halt all aerial bombardment."

The Guardian: No way out for nearly 3 million trapped in cycle of despair in Darfur's camps. Nine-year-old Mastoura stands amid the flies and the stench of Abu Shouk camp, silent and unsmiling. She finally recalls she has lived in Abu Shouk for "four or five years" - she can't really remember how long - and, like her family and most other people in the camp, is too scared to go back to her home village. Even though the government has declared a ceasefire and says it is OK to go home, nobody trusts the government. It is better to stay in the relative safety of the camps where at least regular food is available. An estimated 2.7 million people are scattered in camps across western Sudan, dependent on an international community that has no clear idea what to do with them, no sure way of protecting them and has repeatedly failed to find a solution.
