Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

February 11, 2023

Reuters: Sudan's Bashir must cooperate with ICC on Darfur-UN. Sudan must work with the International Criminal Court whatever it decides regarding a possible arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir over Darfur, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday. "He (Bashir) should fully cooperate with whatever decisions the ICC makes," Ban told reporters at a news conference. U.N. diplomats say the judges will likely decide in favor of indictment and announce their decision this month.

Reuters: Darfur rebels: Sudan advance undermines talks. Darfur rebels accused Sudanese government forces on Wednesday of advancing towards their positions and undermining peace talks that began in Qatar a day earlier. Ahmed Hussein Adam, a spokesman for the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), one of the main Darfur rebel factions, said the group was not pulling out of talks for now. "We are studying the situation closely. We have contacted the mediators. We will see what takes place in the coming hours," he said by telephone, adding that the Sudanese forces were advancing in the east Jebel Mara area.

Redlands Daily Facts (Calif.): Local group to show, discuss plight of Darfur. Area activists hope a documentary on the plight of Darfuri women will bring more awareness about the genocide in Sudan. Members of Washington, D.C.-based SaveDarfur will show "Violence Against Women and the Darfur Genocide" tonight at the Upland Indonesian Seventh-Day Adventist Church. After the film, a panel discussion will be live-streamed from Washington. SaveDarfur is a nonprofit alliance of more than 180 faith-based, advocacy and human rights organizations. The group hopes to secure funding for gender and sensitivity training for Darfur's civilian protection force. It also advocates the implementation of United Nations Resolution 1820 to protect civilians from sexual violence during and after armed conflict.
