AFP: Sudan president backs oil area ruling 'for all.' Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir on Thursday backed an international ruling reducing the borders of the oil-rich Abyei region, but stressed that "all people" in the area would vote in a 2011 referendum on its status. The ruling, issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague after Khartoum complained that a previous border commission had decided on the wrong frontiers, moved Abyei's eastern, western and northern borders. "We welcome the resolution and we are committed to the implementation of it," Beshir told supporters of his National Congress Party at its headquarters in Khartoum.

Sudan's fragile peace overcame a major hurdle Wednesday when a legal panel drew a compromise map splitting an oil-rich region between the government-held north and the semiautonomous south controlled by former rebels. The court ruling on the Abyei region gave the northern government control of significant oil fields and handed the southern administration a large area that contains the home villages of many of those who fought during a 20-year civil war. The international community urged the north and south to swiftly implement the ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which was hailed as just by both sides.
