Associated Press: UN Expert: Rights Situation in Sudan 'Critical'. The human rights situation in Sudan is ''critical,'' an independent U.N. expert said Tuesday, accusing the nation's government of cracking down on its critics and shielding those responsible for gross violations such as rape, torture and murder. Sima Samar, the U.N. special investigator for Sudan, said Khartoum has persecuted human rights activists, aid workers and journalists since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, who is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. ''The human rights situation in the Sudan remains critical,'' Samar said in a 22-page report. ''I continue to receive reports of arbitrary arrests, detention, as well as allegations of ill-treatment and torture of human rights defenders and humanitarian workers by security forces, in particular by the National Intelligence and Security Service,'' she told the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

New York Times: Sudanese Family Reunites in Brooklyn. Growing up among strangers in a refugee camp in the Darfur region of Sudan, 4-year-old Wesal Adam knew her parents mostly as faces in photographs and voices on the phone. She knew that her father, Motasim Adam, and her mother, Wejdan Adam, lived in Brooklyn and that Mr. Adam drove a cab. But she did not know what they felt like or smelled like or how much they loved her -- if at all. Wesal did not know why she had been separated by deserts and oceans from her parents, but once she learned to talk she knew that her lack of certain papers was keeping her from them. But on Monday morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Wesal and her father walked off a plane, reuniting the family and bringing a joyful end to a struggle that lasted more than two years.
