Agence France-Presse: Solution to Darfur conflict in Sudanese hands: AU panel. The Darfur conflict can only be resolved by the Sudanese, former South African president Thabo Mbeki and the head of an African Union panel on the unrest said Thursday. Mbeki said peace, justice and reconciliation over the conflict were related and could not be dealt with separately. The AU has repeatedly called for the deferment of the International Criminal Court arrest warrant on President Omar al-Beshir arguing that the action may threaten efforts to seek peace in Sudan.

Newsweek: Africa's Last, Next War. The north-south war is threatening to reignite in a conflict that could spill over into a half-dozen countries in eastern and central Africa and bring misery to millions of people in one of the world's poorest corners. Already more than 2,000 people have been killed in ethnic fighting in southern Sudan this year - with the rate of violent deaths now exceeding that in Darfur, according to the U.N. A 2005 peace agreement that stopped the fighting is on the brink of collapse, and both sides are rearming in advance of an independence referendum in southern Sudan scheduled for January 2011. But the north has used a range of stalling tactics in an attempt to thwart the poll - a situation that would lead the south unilaterally to declare independence. If it does, the war will almost certainly begin again.

Bloomberg News: PetroChina Parent Wins Engineering Contracts in Sudan. China National Petroleum Corp. said it beat 13 bidders from countries including India to win seven engineering contracts in Sudan, holder of Africa's fifth-largest crude oil reserves. A unit of China National Petroleum was awarded $260 million of engineering and construction contracts for an area known as Block 6 in September, China's largest oil and gas producer said on its Web site today.
