Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Agence France Presse: US special envoy due in Sudan this week.  Special US envoy Scott Gration will visit Sudan this week to help bolster a fragile peace deal in the south and consult on efforts to stabilize the western Darfur region, US officials said Tuesday. Gration, a retired air force general and the Obama administration's pointman on Sudan, will travel to the southern city of Juba, the Darfur region, and the capital Khartoum from Wednesday through Monday, the State Department said.

Reuters: US envoy urges deal between Sudan's former foes. The U.S. envoy to Sudan said he would push the country's former civil war foes to clear two stumbling blocks in their faltering peace deal as he visited the state's oil-producing south on Wednesday.  Envoy Scott Gration said north and south Sudanese leaders needed to resolve wrangling over a census, a building block to elections, and preparations for the referendum.  Gration said he would meet northern and southern leaders in south Sudan's capital Juba in the latest in a series of three- way conferences to try and resolve their differences.

Huffington Post: From Idi Amin to Al-Bashir: A Critical Moment for International Criminal Justice. An estimated 300,000 to 500,000 people died under his brutal reign of terror. Justice was never served. 80,000 of the country's minority, named "bloodsuckers" by the tyrant, were expelled with 90 days to flee their property and possessions. Justice was never served. No, this is not al-Bashir's Sudan. This is Uganda, and at the helm of hell was military dictator and President Idi Amin, who died in exile on Saudi Arabian soil in 2003.
