VOA: North-South Talks in Sudan Fail to Break Gridlock. A new round of U.S.-mediated talks between North and South Sudan has ended in a stalemate, with no agreement reached. The two parties remain at odds over crucial details involving the upcoming national elections and Southern independence referendum. The latest set of negotiations between the South's Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the North's National Congress Party have come to a close with no new headway reached. The talks are being mediated by the U.S. special envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration.

BBC: Kidnapped aid worker phones home. Sharon Commins, who works for the aid agency GOAL, was kidnapped at gunpoint near Darfur ten weeks ago, alongside her Ugandan colleague Hilda Kawuki. Earlier this week the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheal Martin, met government ministers in Sudan in an attempt to secure Ms Commins release. It is understood the 32-year-old has now spoken to her mother in Dublin.

Reuters: Rifles, anti-aircraft guns found in Sudan search. South Sudan's army found more than 600 pistols and rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and four anti-aircraft guns during a surprise search of houses in the region's capital, officers said on Thursday. "There were a lot of guns ... These are very strange things to find in the houses of civilians," the southern army's chief of staff James Hoth said. Officers shut down large parts of Juba on Wednesday as they made door-to-door searches as part of a crackdown on illegal weapons.
