Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

September 18, 2023

The Jewish Chronicle: Activists make plea for Darfur before G20.  Most Jews active in Darfur cite parallels with the atrocities of the Holocaust, but Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition coordinator David Rosenberg sees another parallel: the doggedness required to keep an issue current over many years.  "We're really going to make Darfur and South Sudan shine in the public eye,"Rosenberg said on Monday afternoon, standing on the steps of the City-County building Downtown before a crowd of students, activists, elected officials and Sudanese refugees holding signs bearing the names of villages in the Darfur region of Sudan destroyed over the past five years.

This Op-Ed appeared in the New York Times: Backsliding on Human Rights.   The European leaders gathering at the United Nations for the General Assembly may feel a little smug. For eight years they struggled to persuade George W. Bush that multilateralism mattered. Now Barack Obama has embraced the U.N. enthusiastically.

This Letter to the Editor appeared in the Herald News: Let's stay clear on who's who in Darfur.  Kudos to Martha Randolph Carr for helping to keep the dire situation in Darfur in front of the public ("Darfur democracy and genocide,"Sept. 16).   The single greatest obstacle we in the Darfur activist community face is lack of information about the genocide among the general public.
