Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Washington Post: U.S. Faces Doubts About Leadership on Human Rights.  From the beginning, the Obama administration has unabashedly embraced the United Nations, pursuing a diplomatic strategy that reflects a belief that the world's sole superpower can no longer afford to go it alone. But, as the U.N. General Assembly gets underway this week, human rights activists and political analysts say the new approach has undercut U.S. leadership on human rights issues.  Jerry Fowler, executive director of the Save Darfur Coalition, said the administration's approach to Darfur has been troubling.

Los Angeles Times: Sudan fighting kills 76.  Ethnic fighting in southern Sudan claimed 76 lives over the weekend as tribal militias attacked the village of Duk Padiet, burning more than 2,000 homes, officials said Monday.  The raid was part of a surge in violence in southern Sudan that has killed more than 2,000 people this year and displaced 250,000, according to the United Nations.

New York Times: A U.S. Envoy With a Case for Why the U.N. Matters.  Diplomats here anticipated that after Susan Rice's appointment in January, she would pull off a similar, if more sustained, feat at the United Nations by resurrecting American engagement with the world body. So far, though, she has won praise more for a welcome change in tone than for providing a starring role for the United Nations in American foreign policy.  Just what the administration envisages for the United Nations should become clearer on Wednesday when President Obama delivers his first address to the General Assembly.

Voice of America: Video Games Promote Peace and Democracy.  Several organizations are using video games and other virtual simulations to promote peace, build democracies and support for disaster relief.  In this virtual world, the focus is on the conflict in the Darfur region in western Sudan. An anonymous person created the scenario in the Darfur video game using "Second Life," an Internet site where users can build their own virtual world and talk with others through voice and text chats.
