Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Reuters: Sudan lifts media censorship but editors cautious. Sudan's president ordered an end to state censorship of media on Sunday, officials said, a move that will be seen as an important step towards the country's first multi-party elections in more than 20 years. Editors gave the announcement a cautious welcome, but some said they would still face pressure over sensitive stories.

BBC: Sudan faces 'historic crossroads'. The leader of southern Sudan says the country is at a "historic crossroads", as it gears up for a national vote and a secession referendum for the south. Salva Kiir also raised the prospect of conflict between north and south resuming despite a 2005 peace deal. "We don't want to go back to war but people have to be alerted [sic] always," he told a conference of opponents of President Omar al-Bashir.

NPR: In Darfur, Absence Of Fighting Doesn't Equal Peace. U.S. and international officials say the situation in Sudan's war-torn region of Darfur is improving, but that is little comfort to Darfuris, who have a very different perspective. The situation in Darfur now may not qualify as war, but many say it doesn't look like peace, either.
