Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Reuters: Nigerian peacekeeper killed in Darfur ambush.  A Nigerian peacekeeper was killed and two Kenyan colleagues were wounded in Sudan's troubled Darfur region when armed men ambushed their convoy, the joint U.N./African Union force told Reuters Tuesday. The attack underlined the insecurity that persists in the region despite a flurry of diplomatic efforts to find an end to the six-year conflict. A group of up to eight unknown armed men opened fire on peacekeeping soldiers and police as they escorted a minibus carrying civilian workers in El Geneina Monday evening, force communications chief Kemal Saiki said.

Washington Post: U.S. Envoy's Outreach to Sudan Is Criticized as Naive. The volatility of this East African nation -- from the Darfur conflict to the threat of renewed civil war in the south -- is becoming a test of how President Obama will reconcile a policy of engagement with earlier statements blasting a government he said had "offended the standards of our common humanity."  Top administration officials are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss a major review of the United States' Sudan policy. But even as that document is being finalized, U.S. diplomacy has remained mostly in the hands of Obama's special envoy to Sudan, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration, who is pushing toward normalized relations with the only country in the world led by a president indicted on war-crimes charges.

This Day: Membe, Mahiga both touted for key UN post.  TWO prominent Tanzanians have been named as front-runners for the vacant post of United Nations lead mediator in the Darfur conflict. According to diplomatic sources at UN headquarters in New York, both the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Bernard Membe, and the country's Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr Augustine Mahiga, are being touted for the hotly-contested position.
