Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

February 16, 2023

American Spectator: Obama's Dreadful Sudan Policy.  President Obama's reticence on human rights contrasts sharply with the rhetoric of a candidate who made human rights a focal point of his campaign. Nowhere has the gap between Obama's campaign talk and his administration's actions been greater than on Sudan.

Reuters Africa: Protest at funeral of "tortured" Darfur student.  Armed riot police surrounded hundreds of protesters at the funeral of a Darfuri student who colleagues said was tortured and killed by Sudanese authorities in a case that has sparked tensions ahead of elections.  Sudanese security services have denied any involvement in the death of Mohamed Musa, 23, who fellow students told Reuters was abducted in Khartoum on Wednesday and later found dead.

Sudan Tribune: Arab League chief inaugurates rehabilitation projects in Darfur.  Arab League (AL) chief Amr Moussa on Saturday inaugurated a number of reconstruction and rehabilitation projects in West and South Darfur states in order to encourage voluntary return of Darfur displaced people.

Reuters: Bashir starts Sudan election campaign with a jig.  Campaigning for Sudan's first truly multi-party elections in 24 years began on Saturday with President Omar Hassan al-Bashir dancing his trademark jig and mocking the war crimes prosecutor seeking his extradition.

Sudan Tribune: Darfur situation 'complicated and volatile': UN.  The situation in Darfur is moving in a positive direction but it remains "volatile and complicated" a top UN official this week.  The assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Dmitry Titov, told the UN Security Council (UNSC) that the security situation in Darfur continued to be marked by sporadic fighting among rebel forces as well as between Government forces and rebel movements.
