Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

BBC News: Aid groups warn of Sudan civil war risk.  Poverty and rising violence are causing tension between southern and northern Sudan.  Ten international aid groups say a 2005 peace deal in Sudan is on the verge of collapse and that the world must act now to prevent renewed conflict.  The agencies blamed a "lethal cocktail" of rising violence, chronic poverty and political tensions.

Reuters: Sudan to hold first multi-party elections in 24 years.  Sudan will hold its first multi-party elections in 24 years in April. But already there are complaints about fraud, irregularities and obstacles to opposition parties taking part. Here are some possible scenarios in the run up to the elections.

Sudan Tribune: Sudan kills five civilians in Darfur during aerial bombing - rebels.  Sudanese army has resumed daily bombardments in Darfur since the beginning of the New Year killing some five civilians in the restive region, a rebel group said today.  The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) said Wednesday Sudanese military Antonov aircrafts bombed on daily basis civilian and rebel targets in West Darfur state since Sunday 3 January.

BBC News: South Sudanese cattle raid 'kills 140'.
At least 140 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in Southern Sudan, officials say, as aid agencies warn that the country faces a return to war.  Deputy governor of Warrap state Sabino Makana said members of the Nuer group attacked Dinka cattle herders and seized thousands of animals.   Most of the violence happened over the weekend in the city of Tonj, he said.   The UN says more than 2,000 people have been killed in ethnic violence in the south since last January.

The Telegraph: We must focus on Sudan before it's too late.  A joint agency report, published today, warns that 2,500 were killed and 350,000 displaced last year. A referendum in which the south is expected to vote for secession from the north is exactly a year away, elections are due this year and, with the CPA expiry date 12 months away, agencies warn that war could once again engulf Sudan.  The launch this weekend of the global campaign, Sudan365, is designed to place the plight of some of the poorest people on earth on to the radar of the West.
