Sudan Tribune: Darfur mediation denies postponement of peace talks. The Qatari state minister for foreign affairs in charge of the Darfur file today denied reports about the postponement of peace talks between the Sudanese government and rebel groups. The negotiations are scheduled for the end of this month.  After a series of talks in Ndjamena with the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), the African Union-United Nations Joint Chief Mediator Djibril Bassole delayed a meeting between rebels and delegates of Darfurian civil society in order to allow better representation of the different components there and include refugees in eastern Chad.

Reuters: Darfur rebels say Sudan army attacks market area.  Darfur rebels said Sudan's army had attacked their troops in a populated area of the western state of North Darfur on Saturday, escalating fighting ahead of peace talks due to open this month.  Tensions were already high in oil-producing Sudan which is gearing up for presidential, parliamentary and state governor elections in April.  Saturday's attack follows an assault by the rebel Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) on the government garrison town Golo in Jabel Marra last Wednesday after days of government bombardment of rebel positions in Sudan's remote west.

Sudan Tribune: Arab League to meet in Darfur.  Ambassadors from the Arab League Council will head to Darfur for a rare meeting outside Cairo aimed at showing Arab support to the restive region of Darfur where government militias killed 300, 000 civilians.  The Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa will visit Darfur on February 12 to inaugurate a number of humanitarian projects in North Darfur state. Initially the visit had been scheduled to take place on January 20.

The Toronto Star: Darfur war is the Shabbat subject in synagogues this weekend.  The Jewish people have long known persecution. Both scripture and the history books tell of it, so they carry a special burden to help those being victimized today in Darfur.  That's the message Rabbi Baruch Frydman-Kohl will deliver to his congregation at Beth Tzedec Synagogue, in Toronto, on Saturday. It's part of a nationwide effort to dedicate this weekend's Shabbat services to Darfur.

Sudan Tribune: China may send observers for Sudan's April election.
China, the international power with the largest economic stake in Sudan, may send a delegation to monitor the nationwide elections scheduled for April 2010. The upcoming voting is meant to be Sudan's first free and fair elections since General Omar Al Bashir took power on June 30, 1989. Abdalla Ahmed Abdalla, Deputy Chairman of the National Election Commission, met recently with the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Li Chengwen. They discussed "preparations for arrival of a Chinese delegation to participate in the monitoring of the coming elections in Sudan," according to the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA).

Reuters Africa: INTERVIEW-Sudan presidential candidate promises Darfur deal.
The presidential candidate for Sudan's former southern rebels said on Sunday he would bring peace to Darfur, end Khartoum's pariah status, and win office with the backing of millions of marginalised Sudanese.  The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) on Friday named Yasir Arman as its challenger against Sudan's incumbent President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in April elections.  Arman, a northern Muslim with political clout in Khartoum but little international profile, told Reuters his priorities once elected would include democratic reforms and a public acknowledgement that Darfuris had legitimate grievances.
