Darfur in the News

U.S. and European media

Reuters Africa: Sudan police, opposition clash ahead of elections.  Police clashed with supporters of an independent electoral candidate in east Sudan, arresting 31 people and injuring nine, opposition activists said on Thursday.  Political parties have repeatedly complained of harassment, vote-buying and intimidation by President Omar Hassan al-Bashir's National Congress Party (NCP) during the registration for the first multi-party elections in 24 years in April.

Reuters: Eighty percent of Darfur conflict deaths due to disease.  Nearly 80 percent of the 300,000 conflict-related deaths in Darfur were due to diseases like diarrhea, not violence, Belgian scientists said on Friday.  An analysis of deaths dating from 2003, when rebels took up arms against the government of Sudan, showed that after an initial peak of violent deaths in the still-ongoing conflict, diseases associated with diarrhea became the major killers. The researchers said their results showed that any reduction in humanitarian aid can cause deaths rates to increase sharply, raising "serious concerns" about the consequences of last year's expulsion of aid workers from Sudan by the country's president.

VOA News: Rights Group Criticizes African Union on ICC Indictment of Sudan's Bashir. Richard Dicker of Human Rights Watch says the African Union seems less concerned about the innocent victims of Sudan.  The commissioner of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, Ramtane Lamamra, said the African Union stands by its decision that the International Criminal Court's (ICC) indictment of Sudan President Omar al-Bashir is counter-productive.

Sudan Tribune: Sudan revokes licenses of 26 aid groups in Darfur, warns dozen others.  The Sudanese government announced today that it has revoked the licenses of 26 relief groups operating in Darfur while warning 13 others that they must conform to the country's laws within 30 days or face the same fate.  According to Adam, the abovementioned groups "have not carried out any activities" and failed to renew their annual permits or submit required reports.

Al Jazeera: Sudan's youth form defense militia.  It has been 5 years since Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir signed a peace deal between the central government in Khartoum and the South, ending more than 20 years of war. The deal brought relative calm to the region, but cross-border attacks from Uganda continue. The young men of Nzara in south Sudan have taken matters into their own hands in an attempt to protect their people.
