Global Day for Darfur

April 12: PAIN joined a coalition of NGOs across the globe who held series of events on February 12 to highlight the role that China has played and continues to play in the Darfur conflict and called on China to play a more positive role.

PAIN is concerned about the escalating and intense human rights violations in Darfur. The conflict has left so many people murdered, families displaced, women and children raped. It has now spilled over to neighboring states.

In an effort to stop the violations and the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, PAIN with the assistance of Save Darfur Coalition recently hosted a press conference in partnership with the International Refugee Rights Initiative. Over 120 participants attended the press conference made up of Non Governmental Organizations, human rights activists, media houses, students and civil society groups.

The purpose of the press conference was to raise awareness to the Gambian civil society groups on the causes of the conflict in Darfur, the humanitarian situation facing Darfuris and the role of China in bringing everlasting peace to the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur.

The panel gave invaluable presentations that assisted in formulating concrete strategy for the Gambian civil society to lobby both the Chinese Embassy and the Gambian government to increase its role in bringing to an end the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

The press conference received media coverage ranging from the broadcasting and print media including Daily Observer, Expo Times Representative, POINT, FORAYAA, Daily Express and Kids With Talent Radio Station (KWT).

We printed and displayed banners at strategic locations for public attention. At the Press Conference, Participants signed on both the petition and letter to the Chinese Embassy.

Unfortunately, we could not march as a group to the Chinese Embassy due to the distance between the Conference Hall and the Embassy. However, the panel appointed five (5) key activists to represent the participants at the delivery of the letter to the Embassy. The Event was successful and we believe that the message was passed across on a wider attention.
