Sudan arrests Darfuris after U.N. visit - U.S. official
Sudanese security officials have arrested two Darfuri refugees who were seen speaking to envoys from the U.N. Security Council during a visit to the region, a U.S. official said on Friday.
Sudan's Foreign Ministry, however, denied that anyone who spoke to council members during their October 5-9 visit to Sudan had been arrested.
The U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the United States has been urging the Sudanese government in Khartoum and its diplomats at the United Nations to release the Darfuris and cease the harassment of those who talked to council envoys on their visit.
"It's obviously unacceptable," the official said, adding that the United States has asked U.N. officials to brief the 15-nation Security Council on the matter on Monday. He said that U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice was personally involved in efforts to try to free the detained Darfuris.

SERAP Petitions Jonathan over Sudan
19 September 2023
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan urging him to appoint a “special adviser on Sudan, who would provide political and strategic advice to improve Nigeria’s role and leadership in the global efforts to find a durable solution to the recurring human rights problems in Sudan”.
According to the letter dated September 16, 2023 and signed by SERAPs Executive Director Adetokunbo Mumuni addressed to Jonathan, “we are concerned that despite Nigeria’s contribution to the peace process in Darfur, and to the work of the AU, the country has repeatedly failed to show leadership and assert its authority to put political pressure on the authorities in Sudan to resolve the human rights problems in Sudan.”
SERAP urged Jonathan to ensure that during his “meetings with world leaders in New York that Nigeria plays a key role in the African group and within the AU during the UN General Assembly meeting”.
SERAP said: “Unfortunately, the failure of leadership presently being demonstrated by Nigeria and other key members of the AU has had devastating consequences for innocent civilians in Darfur, especially children and women. Unless Nigeria and other leading members of the AU show leadership and take more proactive steps, the situation in Sudan will continue to deteriorate.”
“Preparations for Southern Sudan to vote for independence are woefully behind schedule and the risk of conflict is increasing. Unfortunately, the African Union (AU) and governments including Nigeria who promised to help implement the peace agreement have failed to develop a package of pressure and incentives to persuade the Sudanese parties to broker peace and not war.
“As a member of the Sudan365 campaigners working to promote durable solutions to the human rights and humanitarian problems in Darfur, SERAP is concerned that the situation in Sudan has seriously deteriorated and that if handled poorly, the January 2011 referendum for southern independence could have a devastating impact on millions of civilians and regional security.”
According to the group, “In Darfur, violence continues against civilians, in particular in the IDP camps. Aid workers have been expelled in recent weeks and kidnappings continue. In North Sudan, there has been a crackdown on human rights defenders, media and political activists since the April elections.”
The UN General Assembly is scheduled to meet in New York from September 20 to 24, for world leaders to discuss the future of Sudan. Over 1000 activists are gathering in 14 countries around the world including Nigeria, Australia, Egypt, Germany, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, and South Africa in a coordinated global day of action, calling on world leaders to take urgent step to prevent a total collapse in diplomacy in Sudan that could lead to deadly conflicts in 2011.

SERAP urges Jonathan to appoint special adviser on Sudan
Ahead of the launch of the global 365 Campaign on Sudan, a human rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has sent an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to appoint a special adviser on Sudan.
In the letter dated September 16, 2023 and signed by SERAP Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, the organi-sation stated that: “We are concerned that despite Nigeria’s contribution to the peace process in Darfur, and to the work of the Africa Union (AU), the country has repeatedly failed to show leadership and assert its authority to put political pressure on the authorities in Sudan to resolve the human rights problems in Sudan.”
According to the organisation, “Unfortunately, the failure of leadership currently being demonstrated by Nigeria and other key members of the AU has had devastating consequences for innocent civilians in Darfur, especially children and women.”
SERAP was of the view that unless Nigeria and other leading members of the AU showed good leadership and took more proactive steps, the situation in Sudan would continue to deteriorate.
The organisation stated further that “preparations for Southern Sudan to vote for independence are woefully behind schedule and the risk of conflict is increasing saying the African Union (AU) and governments including Nigeria that promised to help implement the peace agreement have failed to develop a package of pressure and incentives to persuade the Sudanese parties to broker peace and not war.”
Sudan 365 - New York
September 19: A Global Day of Action
The Sudan 365 event this Sunday was successful and gathered around 50 people to call on the UN General Assembly to ensure a peaceful referendum and justice for the people living in South Sudan and Darfur!
September 19: A Global Day of Action
On Sunday September 19th, we call on our governments to keep the promises that they have made to help bring lasting peace to Sudan. With only four months to go until a referendum that may lead to the breakup of Africa's largest state, preparations are woefully behind schedule and there is an urgent need to ramp up international engagement to ensure a smooth process.
This global day of action takes place on the eve of the high-level session of the UN General Assembly, where world leaders will gather to discuss urgent international issues, such as the issue of Sudan. It is likely to be the only time that world leaders will gather to discuss Sudan’s future before the referendum and that is why it is important that the meeting sends a strong signal of international unity to prevent war and human rights abuses and cement peace. This is what we need to demand of the world leaders attending the UN General Assembly meeting during the up-coming week!
The global day of action constitutes a call for peace, justice, food and safety in Sudan!
The day is sponsored by Sudan365, a global coalition of organizations promoting a peaceful referendum and transition in Sudan in January 2011.
