SA wants faster AU/UN movement in Darfur

South Africa wants countries who have promised troops for the African Union/United Nations peace-keeping operation in Sudan's Darfur region to speed up their deployment.
"If we don't get fast movement of the UNAMID forces, their full deployment and the technical assistance, then the whole comprehensive agreement in Sudan could be endangered," Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad said at a press briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Le défi du Darfour”

Appelée de tous ses vœux par la communauté internationale, la force hydride Union africaine - Nations unies, la Minuad (Mission des Nations unies et de l'Union africaine au Darfour) est opérationnelle, officiellement, depuis le 31 décembre. Force de paix et de stabilisation, elle devra à terme compter 26.000 hommes, mais n'a pour le moment mobilisé que le tiers de ses effectifs.

Security Council, Slams Darfur Attack

The UN Security Council and the United States Wednesday slammed a recent attack on a supply convoy of UN-African Union troops in Darfur as a senior UN official said Sudan admitted responsibility for the incident.

Libya's UN envoy Giadalla Ettalhi, the council chair this month, said after consultations on Monday's attack in west Darfur that all 15 members "made it clear that the attack on UNAMID (the UN-AU peacekeeping force) was unacceptable and must never happen again."

L'Union africaine s'inquiète de la dimension et de l'équipement de la force hybride de maintien de la paix de l'Organisation des Nations unies/UA au Darfour

Malgré le lancement de la Mission des Nations unies et de l'UA au Darfour (MINUAD), les effectifs de ses troupes n'ont pas atteint la dimension prévue par l'ONU et l'UA », a indiqué l'envoyé spécial de l'UA. 

Bien que la MINUAD ait été lancée, elle n'est pas complètement en place et plusieurs pays en Afrique et ailleurs sont prêts à dépêcher des militaires, pour rejoindre la force hybride de maintien de la paix », a-t-il ajouté.
