  • The group also indicated that it will recommend the government endorses the peace process and work with Sudan to resolve the crisis
  • The group refused to answer questions about the controversy surrounding death counts saying it is concerned about providing aid to the victims whether they were just one person or hundreds of thousands

Headline: Nafi Ali Nafi to Represent the Government in Darfur Negotiations
By: Ismail Adam

Well-informed sources indicated that presidential Advisor Nafi Ali Nafi will replace late Majdoub Al Khalifa in leading the government’s team to Darfur negotiations.  He was chosen because:

  • Of his ties to the president and the ruling party
  • Of the complexity of the upcoming peace negotiations
  • Of the involvement of many ministries which require someone of Nafi’s stature to commend their respect

Meanwhile, minister of defense indicated that Darfur hybrid force “has no right to protect the civilian population at all,” but can protect itself, its equipment and headquarters. He added that UNSC resolution “respects Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
And in the mean time, the secretary general of the communist party who concluded a visit to Darfur said:

  • He found Darfuri people to be knowledgeable of their situation and ways to resolve it
  • He criticized the increased role of humanitarian organizations, and
  • Questioned the void left by the absence of local and national humanitarian organizations
  • Splintering rebel groups reached 15 different groups by his count, and
  • Called for a common strategy on which all groups could agree

Headline: The Past Haunts Darfur Refugees as They Yearn for Peace

Mariam, like many other children in this refugee camp in eastern Chad, was orphaned by the atrocities committed in neighboring Darfur region in Sudan:

  • Most refugees describe terrifying events
  • Rape and indiscriminate killing by the Janjaweed militia
  • The artwork of the children show repeated war scenes
  • Planes bombing villages
  • Men on camel and horse backs shooting at everyone, men, women, and children
  • Most the children say they “felt anger” when they drew the pictures

Despite all the pain, most of the refugees are optimistic things would change when Darfur hybrid force will be deployed. However, many insist:

  • The force must have Western troops
  • 70 year old Amina Adam said: “we don’t want African troops; we only want UN troops”
  • Ezzidine Khater said “when we faced difficulties, no Arab came to our rescue”
  • He added “when we arrived here in 2004, we only found ‘white people’ willing to help us… we believe them when they say we will bring you peace”
