Headline: 42 People Killed and Wounded in Renewed Violence and Sudan Asked South Africa to Host Peace Talks with Rebels

About 42 people were killed and many wounded in fresh inter-tribal fighting between Tarajum and Zrigat tribes in Turinga West of Niyala capital of South Darfur state. The fighting comes just days after a three-day visit to Darfur. Meanwhile, Sudan approached South Africa about hosting upcoming peace talks with Darfur rebel groups. At the same time, African Union and United Nations invited rebel groups to Arusha, Tanzania to work on common negotiating strategy ahead of peace talks with the government.

Headline: UN Says Refugees Keep Coming and Violence Continues

Sudanese government strongly objected to adjusted draft resolution regarding deployment of Darfur hybrid force. The adjustments included dropping:

  • Reference to threats against the Sudanese government
  • Call for expert update regarding situation in Darfur
  • Reference to use of force by hybrid force
  • But the Sudanese government still objected to the draft resolution
  • And accused Britain and France of “exporting Iraq Scenario” to Darfur
  • However, United States said Sudan has no right to object to the draft resolution

Meanwhile, Radhia Ashuri, UN spokesperson in Khartoum said that:

  • Refugees keep streaming into big towns and cities to flee violence in more isolated areas
  • Attacks against humanitarian organizations are continuing
  • As is violence against refugee camps including killings, rape, and stealing

Headline: Tanzania to Host Darfur Rebel Meeting and Sudan to Review Adjusted UN Security Council Draft Resolution

Sudanese government spokesperson Ali Al Sadig said the government is studying draft resolution adjustments, which he described as “as positive.” The draft resolution calls for:

  • Deployment of 26,000 troops and police
  • Use of force to protect the troops, aid workers, and civilian population
  • Hybrid force to use of “necessary means” to accomplish its mission

Meanwhile, United Nations and African Union envoys announced they sent invitations to Darfur rebel groups to attend meeting in Tanzania

Headline: 42 Killed and 22 Wounded in Inter-Tribal Fighting in Darfur

United Nations reports indicated that violence and lack of security returned Darfur:

  • 25,000 newly displace people are overcrowding crowded refugee camps
  • Sudanese army continues to bomb north Darfur
  • Confrontations between rebel groups and government forces are continuing
  • And inter-tribal fighting has claimed the lives of 42 people and injured 22

Sima Samar, head of Human Rights investigation group, indicated that she hoped to see human rights improved in all of Sudan and especially in Darfur.

Two days after Al Bashir’s visit to Darfur, fresh inter-tribal fighting between Tarajum and Zrigat tribes in Turinga West of Niyala capital of South Darfur state. It resulted in:

  • 42 people killed
  • 22 people wounded

In addition, Radhia Ashuri, UN spokesperson in Khartoum indicated that lack of security and violence have resulted in:

  • 25,000 newly displaced people
  • Large number of people fled small remote areas to overcrowd bigger towns and cities
  • More banditry and attacks on humanitarian aid workers, which threatens future of aid work

Headline: Sudan Objects to Adjusted Draft Resolution and UN Approves Egyptian Participation in Darfur Hybrid Force

Western powers adjusted UN Security Council draft resolution on Darfur after consulting with African nations to facilitate its adoption, but Sudan UN envoy:

  • Objected to certain passage in the draft do not apply to situation in Darfur
  • Said the draft does not satisfy his country

Meanwhile, UN approved Egypt’s participation in hybrid force with 600 troops and sending field hospital to Darfur.
