Al Jazeera: Sudan and Jem talks set to begin.  Direct peace talks between the Sudanese government and the opposition Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) are set to begin in Qatar, according to Jem. But the group's senior official cautioned that negotiations would be "tough" and that he did not expect the talks to end conclusively by March 15, as envisaged by both sides.

Associated Press: US official: Sudan's elections to be crucial test.
A U.S. official says Sudan's upcoming elections must be as transparent as possible to prepare for a referendum on independence for the oil-rich south in 2011. U.S. Special Envoy Scott Gration said Wednesday that April's presidential and parliamentary polls would not be perfect but could still "reflect the will of the people."

Associated Press: South Sudan defends independence referendum.  Southern Sudan's leader said Tuesday that a 2011 referendum on his oil-rich region's independence is more important to his people than Sudan's upcoming national election. The southern Sudanese consider the referendum a major political achievement in a 2005 peace deal that ended a 20-year north-south war and will defend it at any cost, said Salva Kiir, the president of Southern Sudan.

Voice of America: Regional Summit Urges Implementation of Sudanese Peace Plan.
Delegations from Sudan's north and south met in Nairobi, Kenya, at a special regional summit overseeing the implementation of the 2005 peace deal between the two sides.  The special summit of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development adopted a final resolution urging northern and southern Sudan factions to resolve remaining disputes in the peace agreement, including finalizing the North-South border demarcation and creating an official referendum commission.
